Ecosan: Separating Waste to Create Fertilizer, IDDS Hogares Sostenibles

  • Presentations & Reports

IDDS participants and community partners developed a latrine that separates liquid and solid waste. This way, the solid waste can potentially be used as fertilizer. The design also includes a water catchment system that collects rainfall for hand washing in an enclosed container. Properly sorting and managing the waste can reduce contamination of local water sources and household land. This report is in Spanish.

Nim'Ya: Water Catchment and Storage System, IDDS Hogares Sostenibles

  • Presentations & Reports

IDDS participants and community partners developed a water catchment and storage system that attaches to the roof of any home. Rainwater is filtered before entering a large storage system. The water can then be extracted from the container through a faucet without leaving the container open. This report is in Spanish.

Bait Cultivation System, IDDS Climate Change Adaptation

  • Presentations & Reports

IDDS participants and community members designed a home-based bait cultivation system that can be used throughout the year and is not dependent on river conditions. The system can be used to acquire various forms of bait and is made of materials that are readily available in the community. This report is in Spanish.

Vertical Farming with Rainwater Drip-Irrigation, IDDS Climate Change Adaptation

  • Presentations & Reports

IDDS participants and community members designed an alternative agricultural production system that optimizes the use of water using low cost technologies and less space. The prototype consists of a covered system of vertical orchards that collect rainwater and is estimated to yield 2.7-4.4 times as much compared to traditional farms using the same area of land. This report is in Spanish.

Floating Platform, IDDS Climate Change Adaptation

  • Presentations & Reports

IDDS participants and community members designed a floating device made from guadua bamboo, hermetic tanks, and threads from recycled plastic bottles to promote ecological tourism. The platforms can support approximately 1,500 pounds with space for multiple people and are composed of materials available in the community. This report is in Spanish.

Learning to Adapt: A Case Study of a Climate Change Pilot Project in Shaanxi, China

  • Research

This report and case study presents the research of IDIN 2016 Summer Research Fellow Jessica Gordon, who researched an innovative poverty alleviation and climate adaptation pilot project in a village in rural western China.  The case study finds that the project was effective in influencing the local development plan for the area to take into consideration climate change adaptation and mitigation and to link these issues to poverty reduction, making this the first county in China to develop a climate resilient local development plan.
